Fantastic Price For The Quality - Home Personal Finance Software Review

By Jayden Wilson

If knowing that there are sometimes large expenses in this category, you had set 50 a month there for the last 10 months, you will already have 500 of that ready to go. You will spend $900 in that category to repair the problem.

Its reporting features are weak. You can look at totals in a budget category, and clicking on them will show you graphs, but in this area you cannot get to any detail to analyze the date within a category. Using the program as it was designed requires a change of focus from the dollars you have in your bank account to the dollars you have in your budget categories. This sounded a bit weird at first as I was used to frantically checking bank account balances to make sure we weren't about to overdraw, but once you start living within your budget categories the bank account balances take care of themselves. I've been a long-time Quicken user, and have experimented with other options. This is the first program I've tried that actually is geared around sticking to a budget.

The stress level has been greatly reduced. This is the best software I ever purchased; it paid for itself in two weeks!

It's like increasing the distance between you and the car ahead when driving on ice! I still use Quicken but their budgeting feature leaves a lot to be desired. I think it's a great program, with solid concepts. It almost feels like it's been programmed in (god forbid) Visual Basic or something. My only regret is that I didn't have YNAB Pro 20 years ago! If I had, I'd be sitting on a pile of money right now! And there are many other features you can easily see over on ynab.com. Finally, I should make note that this is not a checkbook register to tell you how much $ you have in your account.

You can't budget without tracking your expenses. Once we started to see where the money was going, we would throttle down in that area. Simply that the bills I pay today are paid with the money I earned last month. The money I earn this month will go to pay my bills for next month. I got that total down to $150, and still got all my beer and smokes, yeah. Last week we spent $174 on groceries, this week, $68 (we checked what we had in the cupboards/fridge this time before going), saved $100. I even tried putting cash in envelopes with various labels, but that idea was quickly foiled because I use my debit card or online bill pay nearly everything. YNAB was a breath of fresh air; I was able to get it up and going in a matter of minutes.

I have joked for a while that I have been an unfortunate "slave" to Quicken for a few years! I HATE QUICKEN! I needed to get away from Quicken as it just was not meeting my budgeting needs according to Dave Ramsey's FPU budgeting standards. I found this software and downloaded it directly from the YNAB website.
