Checklist for Selecting Nursing Schools

By Michael Mccoy

Following the footsteps of Florence Nightingale, The famous lady who introduced the first nursing school in 1860, many nursing schools have come about. Illinois USA has a huge number of such nursing schools and it would be pretty confusing to select the best nursing school.

The following eight tips would guide you in selecting a good nursing school; * Determine your specialty before choosing the right nursing school * Determine the best locality that suits your needs and convenience * Determine whether your ideal nursing school is Accredited * Establish your ideal nursing school's enrollment capacity * Establish your ideal nursing school's class capacity * Establish whether your ideal nursing school offers attachment and apprenticeship * Establish whether you can comfortable meet the tuition cost of your ideal nursing school * Benchmark your ideal nursing school's academic and professional performance

Specialties There are close to forty nursing specialties. Therefore, it is important to know in advance which specialty you would like to belong to before enrolling into a nursing school since not all nursing schools offer the same specialty and if some do it not all are good at it.

Some of the common nursing specialties include; * Palliative care nursing * Ambulatory care nursing * Community health nursing * Burn nursing * Psychiatric care nursing * Obstetrical nursing * Surgical nursing * Urology nursing * Oncology nursing * Orthopedic nursing * Forensic nursing * Hospice nursing

Locality Locality within which the nursing school is situated is extremely important. Nursing is a health profession and therefore should be carried out in a healthy environment. An environment full of pollutants be it industrial fumes or noise would definitely distract you. If you would like to attend a day nursing school where you commute from home or work, then it should be within your home or work vicinity to avoid missing lessons due to lateness.

Accreditation Is the nursing school you are about to choose accredited? What type of accreditation does it hold? Currently, there are two main types of accreditation in Illinois, CCNA and NLNAC. Accreditation ensures that your desired nursing school has approved programs and facilities which guarantee you the most minimum quality standard. This would also ensure that you are a recognized professional which is a prerequisite to your flourishing career.

School capacity Is the school you are choosing sufficiently capable of holding the number of nursing students it admits? Nursing is a highly practical course and thus requires ample space and instructor's attention. A school that seems to have so many nursing students compared to the size of its facility is obviously a constrained school and therefore its capacity to discharge quality nursing education would definitely suffer.
