Buying the right pine baseboard

Buying the right pine baseboard

By Marcel Hudson

Pine baseboard is a great option when it comes to baseboards because it is inexpensive, but nice looking. In addition, pine can match most dcor without too much effort or expense. There are even cases where people own things made of pine, but have no idea because of the way the piece is stained or painted. When you have a baseboard made of pine it can be the same situation.

You need to know what you want your final look to be so that you can decide whether or not your want your pine baseboard to have knots in it. You don't want baseboards that have lots of knots in them if you are planning to paint the baseboards in order to finish them. Your finished painted boards won't look very good if you choose pine boards that have lots of knots in them because the paint won't cover them properly.

You should probably go with a stain instead of paint if you want to choose boards that have lots of knots in them. You can also use a clear sealant instead of stain. You will need to coat the baseboards with something though whether it is a stain, paint or another sealant. If you do decide to go with a stain, the it is best to stay away from an oak stain because the knots are a dead giveaway for pine.

You should only paint your baseboards once they are installed correctly in your home or building. Nail holes is the reason to wait. Small finishing nails are usually used to install baseboards. Even though the nail heads are small they will still show up if you have paint the boards and then install them. It is important though, to prime the boards before you install them. The primer will help the coat of paint to stay on once the boards are painted after they are installed.

If you end up buying cheap quality pine skirting, you'll end up throwing half of it away as it will not be usable.
