ASTM Bolts And Their Differences

ASTM Bolts And Their Differences

By Edward White

Bolts come in diverse specifications, their respective structural makeup defining their capacity and flexibility to various circumstances and surroundings. The ASTM or American Society for Testing and Materials is the international body that defines standards of quality for these bolting materials. Manufacturers worldwide use ASTM standards in the craftsmanship of every bolt and stud that will later find their way to industries.

One example of an ASTM bolt specification is the A193 bolt, made of alloy steel and stainless steel, which is best used for high-temperature and high-pressure works. There are also a lot of other ASTM bolting specifications apart from this, and it also pays to know the difference.

The A307, for instance, is crafted from carbon steel, while the A320 has the same makeup as the A193 but is built for low temperature uses. The A325, on the other hand, is a structural bolt made of steel, while the A354 are tempered and quenched alloy bolts and studs. The A449 is of a similar makeup, and is best for general usage. The A490, meanwhile, is a heat-treated structural bolt made of alloy steel.

What are the best uses for the A193? This specification is used heavily in chemical construction and petroleum processes. The A193 fasteners are used in fittings, valves, pressure vessels, as well as flanges. General applications require eight threads per inch for all diameters exceeding one inch.

The A193 also comes in different grades, including the A193 B7 Stud, the B8 (which has both Class 1 and Class 2 stainless steel), and the B8M. The A193 B7 is available in alloy steel makeup. It also comes in three size groups: 2-1/2, 2-5/8-4, and 4-1/8-7. In ideal conditions, these tools come in the form of Xylon coated bolts and nuts, which makes them one of the best general use tools one can use nowadays for their excellent capacity to resist extreme temperatures and highly corrosive environments as well as their distinct structural composition.
